Yellow eyed penguin 

The rare - critically endangered - yellow eyed penguin, as seen on Otago Peninsula, near Dunedin coming in to its nest after a day of fishing in the deep ocean. The wee creature has the infamous title of the world's rarest penguin.

These two images show the penguin returning to the nest after a day of fishing. One as it wades in the surf and a second close up as it scurries past the hide.

Sea lion and pup 

This is a mama kake, New Zealand sea lion, and female cub near Dunedin, New Zealand Taken while lying on the sand in early springtime on a cold, deserted and windswept beach. 

Pakake, New Zealand sea lion, are one of the rarest sea lion species in the world and are endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand. Although Patake were once hunted to near oblivion and disappeared entirely from mainland Aotearoa, they started returning three decades ago to breed in some coastlines in the far south. Pakake are nationally vulnerable.

A bit about terminology: Pakake is the Māori word in the dialect of Māori in the Ōtepoti region for New Zealand sea lion. Whakahao for the male of this species, and kake for the female.
